Donald Berger, the managing director of the Vine Quality Hospitality Group, one of the organizers of the event, said over 400 entries had been submitted from Vietnam, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Chile, Argentina, China, Japan, the U.S., and other countries.

The competition, scheduled for 11-12, is an opportunity for vintners to popularize their products in the promising Vietnamese market.

Its jury will be headed by Robert Joseph, a wine expert who has judged several international wine challenges around the world.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as trophies for the “Wine of the Year” will be on offer.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi on November 13. The ceremony will also honor the best chefs in the country.

Tickets to the ceremony will cost $100 per person and $1,200 for a corporate table, with the entire estimated proceeds of US$50,000 going to children affected by Agent Orange.

The Viet Nam Alcohol Beer & Beverage Association is the joint organizer of the event this year.

The first International Wine and Spirit Competition, held at Hanoi’s Press Club in 2002, saw the launch of comprehensive international standards for wine grading in Vietnam and culminated in the largest wine festival ever held in the country.

Besides Berger, who is also deputy secretary general of the Viet Nam Alcohol Beer & Beverage Association, Nguyen Van Hung and Robert Joseph, founders of the London International Wine Challenge, the biggest wine competition in the world, were also instrumental in initiating the competition.

Tickets are available at the Vine Wine Boutique, Bar & Cafe, 1A Xuan Dieu Street, Hanoi.

A winetasting will be held for the public November 17 at the Sofitel Plaza hotel. Tickets will cost VND100,000.
