The tables turn as aspiring DJs spin in competition
17:00 25/03/2004

More than 30 disc jockeys in Hanoi and HCM City will compete this week in the country's second DJ tournament, organised by the Central Light Music Theatre and the D&D Advertising Company.

The event-Search Out Vietnam's Young DJ Talent 2004 - is a chance for emerging mixmasters to make a name for themselves in the dance music world.

"A couple of years ago, a disc jockey was something new in Vietnam. But now the job is becoming popular among youth," said Ngo Nhat Tien, Deputy Director of the Central Light Music Theatre.

"Through our competition, we hope to create a place for DJs who love and perform music in a different way."

He said nine outstanding DJs will be selected to spin their tunes in three semi-final rounds, to be held in popular night clubs in Hanoi and HCM City.

"Our semi-finals will be a great party of light and music," he said.

"It would be great some day if Vietnam's DJs could find success at home and in other countries, and with the DJs I've heard, that day shouldn't be too far off."

To get to the final, the DJs will have to perform their most creative mixing for the judges and fans, who will also vote.

At the final ceremony, the best turntable talent in the country will perform before the jury, which will include well-known musicians from the HCM City and Hanoi Musicians' Associations and international mixing superstar Tiejis Veruuest Tiesto.

The winner will receive a cup and VND10mil in cash.

Mr Tien also said all nine participants of the semi finals will be trained next month by foreign professional DJs through a course sponsored by Heineken.

Last year, HCM City's Nguyen Dinh My Quyen took first place.

Ms Quyen, with her 30-minute set of nine songs, including popular tunes Get The Party Started and Rescue Me, won over the young crowd and the judges, which included British superstar mixmaster Paul Oakenfold.

Oakenfold said last year that Vietnamese DJs were "skilled in mixing and devoted their feelings to their performances, building a relationship between themselves and their audiences."

Named 'World's Best DJ' by DJ Magazine three times and twice selected for a British Award the UK equivalent of the American Grammy Awards, Paul said young DJs in Vietnam need more opportunities to shine.

The 2004 event's semi-finals will be held on March 26-31 at 8pm and on April 2 at the New Century Club on 10 Trang Thi Street in Hanoi and at the Mua Rung Club on 2 Ho Huan Nghiep Street in HCM City.

The final will take place on April 7 at the Mua Rung Club in HCM City.
