A contest to climb Indochina’s highest peak, Fansipan, will be organized in Vietnam as part of a travel festival.

Lao Cai province in the north, where the peak is situated, said over 200 Vietnamese and foreign climbers had already registered for the contest scheduled for early April.

The province’s chairman, Nguyen Huu Van, said the best time of the year to climb the 3,143m peak was from September to April when forest flowers were in full bloom.

The contest will promote a local tourism festival titled Sapa in the Clouds.

Sapa is an incredibly picturesque village that lies on the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border. It is home to many distinct hill tribes, their traditional villages, rice terraces, and lush vegetation.

It is also home to some of Vietnam’s most spectacular scenery.
