Until a few years ago, people’s belief in numerology was most evident in the desire to get a numberplate with a good number. In recent years, not surprisingly, the rush for the lucky number has been most marked among mobile phone users.      

However, a good mobile phone number does not just connote good look, but also wealth, status and power. And when status and power get involved, the price soars high; but those who pay it do not regret it.

Nguyen Van Quang, a SIM shop owner in HCM City’s Ton Duc Thang Street, says to buy a good number, subscribers may spend VND4 – 15 million. For more than VND15 million, people can purchase a VIP phone number.

Some numbers can be sold for hundreds of millions of dong. Such special numbers are often auctioned off for charity.

Tran Quang Thang, a mobile phone number collector (and seller), says he spends up to VND25 million to get a number that he likes. He knows that the number often does not match the price, but he loves it and buys it anyway.

Thang says at first he used the number just because it is beautiful and easy to remember, then he felt it gets him more respect from friends and helps him obtain business contracts more easily.

He explains that when making a phone call to a "VIP" number, other people will show respect and are willing to help; they also remember the number even though they might not know who he is.
