Visitors to one of Australia's largest art museums in Sydney will be able to marvel at 22 valuable Cham sculptures next year.

Cham sculpture.

Jackie Menzies, of the New South Wales Museum that will display these artefacts, says, "Cham culture has caught the attendtion of archaeologists in Australia and around the world. They are longing to view ancient sculptures created by Cham people at our gallery."

Menzies recently spent three days working with the Cham Museum in Da Nang to prepare for the exhibition.

The Da Nang museum now houses Vietnam's largest Cham collection of graceful sandstone figures from between the fifth and the tenth centuries.

"I selected 22 antiques. Unfortunately, I had to leave nine figures out of my selection because they're too big," she says.

"Art lovers in Australia and Europe will be captivated by the valuable Cham antiques coming to our museum. Most of these are now kept in storage, which means that most people have not has opportunities to contemplate them," she continues.

"Under the care of Australia's museum experts, the exhibits will be flown on Australia, just as the Phnom Penh relics were transported here for exhibition some years ago," Menzies says.

Vietnam's antiques were exhibited abroad for the first time last year, at the Royal History and Art Museum of Belgium.
