Local travel agencies have launched special domestic tours for overseas Vietnamese who return to the homeland to enjoy the traditional Lunar New Year, or Tet, which falls in mid-Feb.

Festival and Nimbus Tourist companies offered a six-day tour of the capital city of Hanoi where overseas Vietnamese will visit historic relics of the former Thang Long Citadel such as Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), known as Vietnam’s first university, Tran Quoc pagoda and Ngoc Son Temple.

Other destinations include tourist spots in the northern region like Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province, Huong pagoda in Ha Tay province and Sa Pa resort in Lao Cai province.

Festival Company is also offering a five-day tour of Cat Ba Islands in the northern port city of Hai Phong and a six-day tour of Tuan Chau resort in the northeastern border province of Quang Ninh.

Some other leading travel agencies including Saigontourist, Fiditourist and Ben Thanh Tourist in Ho Chi Minh City have launched trans-Vietnam tours due to last between 15-18 days.

Visitors will also have a chance to enjoy traditional art performances and special Tet dishes of the northern, central and southern regions.

Fiditourist launched luxurious package tours of favourite destinations among overseas Vietnamese including highland resort town of Dalat, central beach towns of Phan Thiet, Da Nang, and Nha Trang and Phu Quoc in the Mekong Delta.

Some 6,450 overseas Vietnamese have booked Tet tours through Saigontourist’s website www.dulichtet.com, a year-on-year increase of 30 percent.

The first day of the Lunar New Year will fall on February 17, 2007.
