Vietnam heritage town welcomes caravans from Thailand
12:37 04/03/2009

A group of 26 caravans with 66 tourists from Thailand arrived Sunday in Vietnam’s World Heritage town of Hoi An.

After visiting Hoi An, the visitors will go along the Ho Chi Minh trail to Laos through Kontum province in the central highlands.

Four days ago they entered Laos through the Huu Nghi (Friendship) Bridge connecting Thailand’s Mukdakhan province and Laos’ Savannakhet to mark the bridge’s inauguration.

They then came to Vietnam through the Lao Bao checkpoint and have since been to some of the most well-known sites in the country like Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, and Danang before arriving in Hoi An.

This is the first caravan group to visit Hoi An though neighboring Da Nang city saw the number of caravan tourists increase five-fold this year to 20,000.

But Hoi An is expected to receive more caravans following the opening of the Huu Nghi Bridge on December 20.

Caravans are only permitted to enter Vietnam through the Lao Bao checkpoint in Quang Tri province and Cau Treo in Ha Tinh province.
