14:36 04/03/2009

Mui Ca Mau National Park in Vietnam’s southern tip, which is home to over 100 endangered animals and birds and is an important site for migratory water birds, has been named a world biosphere reserve.

Officials from the Vietnam UNESCO committee met local officials Monday to work on establishing the reserve.

The 41,862 hectare park contains 26,600 ha of intertidal mudflats and the country’s largest mangrove forest.

Set up in July 2003 as a National Park, Mui Ca Mau also has a large number of marine species.

Globally threatened and near-threatened migratory water bird species sighted there include Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis), Asian Dowitcher (Limnodromus semipalmatus), Chinese egret (Egretta eulophotes), painted stork (Mycteria leucocephala), spot-billed pelican (Pelecanus philippensis) and black-headed ibis (Threskiornis melanocephalus).

Large concentrations of Eurasian Curlew (N. arquata) have also been recorded at the site.

The park in the southernmost province of Ca Mau is constantly growing due to accretion rates along the coastline of up to 80 meters per year.
