Earlier in 1997 violist Bui Cong Duy became the first Vietnamese to take the top prize at the third International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Saint Petersburg.

The International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians is composed of competitions in piano, violin, and cello for under-18 musicians. It serves as a prelude for the world's leading International Tchaikovsky Competition.

This year competition drew the participation of 130 contestants. The winners of the first, second and third prizes will be nominated for straight entry into the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition for musicians aged between 17 and 32.
